Partnership for Change: Australia–China Joint Economic Report

#

The Australia-China Joint Economic Report was officially launched on Monday 15 August in Canberra. The report is the result of a joint study conducted by the East Asian Bureau of Economic Research (EABER) in the Crawford School of Public Policy at The Australian National University (ANU) and the China Center for International Economic Exchanges (CCIEE) in Beijing. This landmark study brought together for the first time academics and industry leaders from both countries sharing their insights on the development of the Sino-Australian relationship over the next decade.

China has already been Australia’s largest trade partner for several years: almost a quarter of Australia’s overall trade comes from China. While the ChAFTA represents a significant step in facilitating the development of trade links, further policy initiatives are needed for both countries to maintain strong future ties.

The report recommends deeper bilateral arrangements between China and Australia with the creation of an independent, bi-national Commission “to boost the level and range of political, scientific, official, business and community exchanges between the two counties.”
