Aldi to Expand in China with Australian Suppliers
German discount supermarket Aldi is set to expand into China using Australia as a springboard.
In the second quarter of 2017, Aldi will commence its expansion into China selling a range of selected produce and grocery items to Chinese consumers via an online retailing platform offering home delivery before building a physical presence through brick and mortar stores.
While Aldi intends to maintain its assortment of German brands, there will also be a focus on offering Australian products. A spokeswoman for Aldi said that “there is a strong demand among Chinese consumers for Australian manufactured products and [Aldi's goal] is to provide a competitively-priced alternative for shoppers seeking quality groceries”.
