Rio Tinto’s business is finding, mining and processing mineral resources. Major products are aluminum, copper, diamonds, energy(coal and uranium), gold, industrial minerals(borax, titanium dioxide, salt, talc) and iron ore. Activities span the world but are strongly represented in Australia and North America with significant businesses in South America, Asia, Europe and southern Africa. Rio Tinto’s commercial ties to China go back some 50 years. Every year, we supply huge amounts of essential minerals and metals, such as aluminum , copper, energy products, industry minerals and iron ore to China. We provide the mineral resources that underpin infrastructure growth and the metal intensive needs of urban populations. Today China is our largest customer. In addition, Rio Tinto also sources and buys manufactured goods including raw materials, railway equipment, truck bodies and components and so on from China each year. Rio Tinto also shares its state of the art technologies with China. All these achievements have received wide attention from the top leaders of the Chinese party and government. Many of them have visited our operations in Australia. Rio Tinto registered its first representative office in Beijing in 1983. Currently we have six representative offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, five wholly owned foreign enterprises in Beijing , Shanghai and Suzhou and one joint venture in Gansu.
