Global Talent Visa Part 1 – Benefits of the GTV

Global talent visa has come a long way since it was first introduced in late 2019.
It remains one of the most popular and in-demand Australian permanent resident visas on the market. As part of Ashton Legal’s Global Talent Visa Series, which will provide all the latest news, updates, and case studies regarding the Global Talent visa program, we take a look at the key benefits of the GTV and what sets it apart from any other Australian migration pathways.
Benefits of the global talent visa (global talent stream)
1) The global talent visa (global talent stream) can provide the applicant visa holder Australian permanent residency within 1-6 months on application (EOI processing time varies between 2 weeks to 14 months)
2) It is a one stop permanent resident visa
3) The candidate only deals with the federal government/Department of Home Affairs, i.e., there is no legislative requirement for the involvement of other government agencies
4) There is no occupation list to limit the candidate’s professional background
5) There is no legislated minimum English requirement for the visa grant
6) There is no points test, i.e., the candidate is not disadvantaged for being in an older age bracket, or not having very high English proficiency, or not having Australian qualifications
7) There is no requirement on the minimum qualification or mandatory skills assessments to validate applicants’ skills and experience in their field of expertise
8) There is no requirement on financial commitment or investment (as opposed to business skilled migration)
9) There is no requirement for the candidate to have secured employment in Australia (although that would be a bonus to demonstrate the candidate’s ability to establish in Australia).

Increasing threshold to get invited under the global talent visa
The Australian government has committed a significant amount of resources in promoting the programme since its inception and, as a result, there is an increasing number of Expressions of Interests for this programme.
Thanks to the subjective nature and the flexibility permitted under the legislation for the global talent visas, such as “sustained international achievements that are outstanding and exceptional”, “being able to make significant contribution to Australia” and “the candidate must be currently prominent”, the Australia government is able to calibrate the programme parameters to best meet, and advance, Australia’s innovation and technology agenda in future-focused industries and sectors.
Days when high academic achievers (Master’s degree or Bachelor’s (Honours) degree holders with 85 WAM and above in target sectors) can qualify on their academic achievements alone are now gone.
Despite a significant drop in the programme planning level for the global talent visa (global talent stream) from FY2021-22 to FY2022-23, we believe the Australian government is continuing to attract the best of the best to Australia.
Global Talent Officers (GTO) around the world continue to actively participate in various forums, such as trade shows and leading industry events, to promote the programme and attract high calibre candidates. They are approachable, not only to migration practitioners, but also candidates themselves directly, and will consider endorsing exceptional candidates where their EOIs can be assessed on a priority basis. Ashton Legal has been successful in securing GTO endorsement of a number of EOIs for our clients, which have resulted in priority processing of their EOIs and subsequent invitations to apply for the Global Talent visa.
