On July 15 2020 AustCham Shanghai hosted the “2020 Ultimate Guide to Social Media in China” webinar. We would like to thank Alex Duncan from KAWO Technologies who gave an impressive 150 slide presentation focusing on China’s social media and how companies should effectively utilize China’s biggest digital platforms to marketing.

Here are some of the key points from the webinar:

1. LinkedIn is the only major western social network that managed to remain available in China by strictly complying with Chinese internet regulations

2. Four Tech companies take 70% of Chinese netizens use of digital platforms

  • Jack Ma: Alibaba Group
  • Pony Ma: Tencent
  • Robin Li: Baidu
  • Zhangyiming: ByteDance (Tiktok)

3. Three approaches to e-commerce in China

  • Sell direct: through your own website/app
  • Marketplaces: the dominant way in China (Taobao, TMall, etc)
  • Social Commerce: influencers, content marketing

4. WeChat is successful because of the power of QR codes, which allow for easier and faster access for payments, friend requests, etc.
