Peter Arkell

Peter Arkell is the Managing Director of Swann Global's Asia operations. Swann Global is an international executive search firm, founded in Melbourne in 1993 and, while its capability has been demonstrated across the breadth of industry, its special focus is the mining, metals and energy sectors. Peter first came to China in 1996, and has chosen to live here since 2004. In many respects, he calls Shanghai home, where his China head office is located. He is an active member of the international business community in China, being a Member of the Board of Directors of the AustCham Shanghai since 2008. He is also a member and sustaining sponsor of the Global Mining Association of China (GMAC), and founding Chairman of the Oriental Mining Club. Melbourne is Peter's hometown and he supports the Demons whenever he is within range of the MCG; while abroad he makes do with AFL broadcasts on the Australia Network. Having seen their last premiership in 1964, the desire beats true for their next flag.

Kim Gilliland is CEO China, Which Property. Kim has extensive professional networks and a comprehensive knowledge of the China market, having lived in Beijing and Shanghai since 2008. Kim was AustCham Shanghai's interim Executive Director in 2010, and previously Sales Director Greater China, Media Monitors. Prior to arriving in China, Kim worked in the media and communications industry in Melbourne for many years.

David is President and Founder of Dash Brands, a multi-brand quick service restaurant company based in Shanghai. The company has the operating rights for major Australian and international brands including Subway, Domino's, Gloria Jean's Coffees and Boost Juice Bars. Dash Brands operates 75 corporate and franchisee owned restaurants in Shanghai, Jiangsu and Beijing. David has been an active member of AustCham Shanghai since 2007, and brings to the Chamber 17 years experience in China as a corporate finance advisor and business leader.

Managing Director of Off-Site Connections Event Management established in Australia in 1995. After successfully producing events for Chinese clients in Australia for 10 years, Peter opened
an office in Shanghai in 2005 and has been living fulltime in Shanghai since March 2009. With over 25 years experience in the events industry, Peter hopes to add value to the events portfolio through both the business and social aspects of the chamber.

Ben is Marketing Director, Dulwich College Management and has been in China since 1997 when he first arrived as a Chinese language and literature undergraduate. Ben brings a diverse background and China experience to the Chamber studying and working in Nanjing, Xi'an, Beijing, and Shanghai. Ben previously worked in the education, fashion, agriculture and media industries in China with the Financial Times (UK), the Australian wool industry and the University of Queensland. Ben has a PhD in Economics (UQ) and is an alumni of the Australia-China Council Young Business Scholar programme. He is currently the Director of Marketing & Communications for the Dulwich College group of schools & the Byron Education group in China and Korea. Ben is keen to further promote the cause of the Australian business community in Shanghai.

Prior to this, he has been involved in the Steel Industry in Australia in a number of senior executive roles and a number of Key Industry Associations. As the leader of a Foundation member of AustCham Shanghai, he is very keen to assist with the development of Australian business in China.

Director of Corporate & Institutional Relationships with ANZ China. David has lived in Shanghai since 2008, and was previously with ANZ in Sydney for five years across a number of Relationship Management positions. His current role at ANZ provides him insight into the challenges and priorities of Australian companies in China, and he relishes the opportunity to represent them as part of the AustCham Shanghai Board. David is also a member of the Bashers Cricket Club, and is the Club Treasurer for 2010 and 2011.

Michael is the head of Blake Dawson's China Practice and has lived in Shanghai with his family since 2001. Michael has extensive experience working as a legal consultant for internationally recognised law firms in Shanghai, and has worked as the General Manager and founder of Wadley Business Consulting since 2004. Other than legal and business advisory skills, Michael has considerable experience in committees and boards in public life (both profit and non-profit), including a past term with AustCham Shanghai.

Andrew heads Westpac's business in Greater China and is responsible for the mainland China branches as well the Hong Kong branch. Andrew is based in Shanghai where he has lived for the last four years. He is a senior banker with extensive international experience across various product, customer and management roles.

Michael Clifton is the Country Manager, China and Senior Trade Commissioner, Shanghai for the Australian Trade Commission.

Fluent in Mandarin and Japanese, Michael's career highlights include several postings to Hong Kong, three years at the Australian Embassy in Tokyo and four years as Senior Trade Commissioner and Consul General in Osaka.  Prior to his current appointment, Michael served as Principal Adviser and Chief of Staff to Simon Crean, Minister for Regional Australia, Regional Development and Local Government.

Elizabeth Cole, resident in Orrick's Shanghai (where she is the administrative partner-in-charge) and Beijing offices, is a member of Orrick's Corporate Group. 

Ms Cole has been practicing with international law firms across Asia for 20 years.  Her practice includes: Employment Law, Financing, Information Technology, Life Sciences, People's Republic of China Direct Investment/M&A. Before joining Orrick, Ms Cole was the Managing Partner of the Shanghai Office of Deacons.

Lawrence Lau is the Finance Director of Owens Corning Building Materials Asia Pacific Operations.  He is responsible for leading the regional team to support the business operations, M&A and PMI activities. 

Lawrence is a Fellow CPA (Australia) member with nearly 20 years of finance, business and strategy consulting experiences across Asia Pacific. He is an active committee member of the CPA Australia since 1996 and he was elected as the President of the Shanghai committee in 2009 and 2010.  Prior to that, he was the Vice President of Shanghai Committee and Chairman of CPA Continuous Professional Development committee.  He was the winner of the inaugural Australia China Alumni Association Award (Banking and Finance) in 2009. Melbourne is Lawrence's home town and he lived in Singapore, Thailand, Japan and South Korea before being posted to China in 2003.

Interested in joining the Board of Directors?

The members of the Board of Directors are nominated prior to the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and voted in at the AGM by AustCham Shanghai Corporate members.

Throughout the year, vacancies may arise on the Board of Directors. These vacancies are then advertised to all members who can nominate for interim appointment to the Board.
