The Australian pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo will host the
2010 Australia-China Futures Dialogue on 12 August on the theme
Achieving Sustainable Development in the Asia
Pacific.
Policy-shapers and academics from Asia and the Pacific will
discuss practical models for achieving sustainable economic
development in the face of climate change and other challenges.
The dialogue is part of the Australia-China Futures Dialogue
project, an initiative of Queensland's Griffith University and
China's Beijing University. The aim is to encourage open
discussion between Australia and China on regional issues, and to
provide a platform for building common understanding in our region
about major contemporary issues.
Commissioner-General Ms Lyndall Sachs said the Shanghai World
Expo, with its focus on sustainability, provided an unparalleled
venue for discussing economic development of the region.
"Australia, with a world-class economic framework that enabled
us to withstand the worst of the global financial crisis, is keen
to promote discussion and ideas on future-oriented policy issues
that support economic and social development in the region."
"I am pleased that the iconic Australian pavilion will welcome
delegates from China, Japan, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea for the
dialogue," said Ms Sachs.
The dialogue will be divided into three sessions designed to
explore the definitions of sustainability, the
impact of climate change on economic
sustainability, and sustainable tourism
and economic growth.
The event is delivered by the Queensland Government as a
Platinum Partner of the Australian pavilion.
