The primary role of DFAT in Shanghai is to strengthen the bilateral relationship between Australia and China and improve access to the Chinese market for Australian business. It also provides a range of consular and passport services for Australian citizens, through the Australian Consulate-General, Shanghai. If you are an Australian citizen residing in Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi or Hubei, the Consulate in Shanghai can help you with:
- Registration: Registration of Australian citizens in Shanghai can be done through the Australian Consulate-General, Shanghai or online. Your details are protected by the Privacy Act 1988 and will not be shared with any other Government agency.
- Information Bulletin: The Consulate produces a regular Information Bulletin which can be found on its website or emailed to registered members.
- Consular Services: Assistance in the case of arrest, natural disaster, civil unrest, accident, serious illness or death; Certifying copies of documents and witness signatures; and Other matters (click here)
Passports: The Consulate accepts applications for new passports and conducts interviews. You can complete your passport application form online, or the Consulate can mail it to you, but it must be submitted to the Consulate in person. Click here for information on necessary documents and passport fees. Australia introduced a new passport system on 3 December 2003. If you already have a current valid passport, you can continue to use it until it is due to expire or its pages are full. Remember that getting a new passport now requires TEN working days. Lost, stolen or damaged Passports must be reported immediately to the nearest Australian diplomatic or consular mission or to Passports Australia. The Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) is the Federal Government agency that helps Australian companies win overseas business for their products and services by reducing the time, cost and risk involved in selecting, entering and developing international markets. Their mission is to contribute to community wealth by helping more Australians succeed in export and international business. Austrade is represented in 110 locations in 56 countries including an extensive domestic network throughout Australia. Austrade offers practical advice, market intelligence and ongoing support (including financial) to Australian businesses looking to develop international markets. Austrade also provides advice and guidance on overseas investment and joint venture opportunities, and helps put Australian businesses in contact with potential overseas investors. Austrade is a statutory authority within the Foreign Affairs and Trade portfolio. Austrade is governed by a board, whose members are drawn from business and government.

DIMIA services include: Visitor visas; Business visas; Migration visas; and Australian citizenship. Online Applications are possible for some visa types for applicants of certain nationalities (but not for Chinese nationals at this time). Citizenship applications can be lodged online.
